The Last Supper In Detail

Italian government has cooperated with a digital image company HAL9000 to put one of the Leonardo da Vinci’s most famous work “The Last Supper” on-line on October 27, 2007. In order to give people the opportunity to closely observe and study every minimal detail of the work, the painting is captured in 1677 images then recomposed in computer to form a world record size single image of more than 16 billion pixels.

The image size is 16.118.035.591 pixels (172181 pixels wide and 93611 pixels high), taken by Nikon D2Xs D-SLR camera with the AF-S Nikkor 600mm f/4D IF-ED II high brightness lens allows the shooting of high quality professional images. To ensure absolute chromatic fidelity the image was generated with a color depth of 16 bit, twice that of conventional digital images, which makes the image size greater than 96 Gbytes on disk.
