2009 • Posted by Kai @ 2:37 PM

I am always looking for some textural backgrounds so I can use them not just for artistic photographing but also graphic designing. Here is an amazing collection of grunge textures and they are basically free (do read the terms of use before downloading). However, why this kind of images called “grunge textures”?

Daniel Simon’s Automotive Concepts

2008 • Posted by Kai @ 3:01 PM

I always like to draw cars, motorcycles, & characters since when I was in high-school, and my sketch books have full of this kind of stuff. Move on to the digital era, I found a very cool 3D work done by Daniel Simon, who is a German automotive futurist and the founder of Daniel Simon Studio where he is designing virtual vehicles for his brand Cosmic Motors, published in his first book “Cosmic Motors”. In parallel he continues to be a car designer, and offers his services to a premium car maker.

There are a lot of amazing works on Daniel Simon’s website and it’s worth to spend sometime to take a look.

CAR TOWN

It is not a fully drawing animation because I don’t have that much time to animate every scene. However, it still took me more than a week to draw these pictures and edit them into a film.

Rendering The Movie

2008 • Posted by Kai @ 3:17 PM

Quite busy these days. This is a digital model movie that I edited from some clips. The modeling only focused on the main gallery and around, the rest buildings just some blocks and simple forms. The original movie is a 1280×720 HD format and downsized for internet purpose. The process of this movie was modeled in Rino, rendered in Cinema 4D, then edited in Motion & Final Cut Pro. I like the ending part (geese fly by) most.

Living In The Cars

2008 • Posted by Kai @ 10:46 PM

My idea is using the disused vehicles to create a community for homeless people, and the scenario is the period of end of oil. The major power source in this community is solar power (of course), and these drawings showing the vehicles have been modified into shelter, greenhouse (for growing food), store, public bathroom, and diner… etc. This is just the very basic concept of the vehicle community, further design will more critical.

Nighttime Scene Modeling

2008 • Posted by Kai @ 8:23 PM

I rarely build the nighttime scene 3D modeling. In some reasons, the nighttime scene is ways more difficult than daytime scene in terms of lighting issue. In daytime, I can just set up a direct sunlight in most cases. But in nighttime, I have to set up enough lights to light up every buildings. Moreover, I need to place some dramatic lighting for the major structures. However, I like nighttime scene because I like to play around with the car’s light trail.
